Original film prints to thousands of iconic films like Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, and Casablanca had been languishing, unseen and uncared for, in film vaults across studio lots. As a result, the ravages of time had broken down the celluloid properties and left these former treasures in heaps of ruin, lost forever. Only by chance and shear luck, were these preservationists able to raise awareness and the resources necessary to save what remained and avert the total loss of such memorable moments captured in moving images. The preservation process continues to this day.
The lesson learned was “protect your investment.” These films cost studios hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars each. Allowing them to rot away without a second thought to care and preservation was ludicrous and bad business. Not to mention what was and could have been lost to future generations! What you should know about your leather product:
Your leather product is handcrafted from natural, specialty, or Italian hide and when first received by you, may appear rigid and have a stiff movement. It is BRAND NEW and hasn’t had the chance to be ‘worn in’. This takes time and with proper handling and care, the final result is a tool conformed to your specific pattern of use and need. The natural beauty of your leather product will also become evident as the oils from your hands patina the most often handled edges and parts – making it truly unique to you. All of this is NORMAL and should be expected.
Unlike store-bought leather goods, we further strive to enhance our products with the natural beauty inherent to leather. Each hide features its own wrinkles, scars, and markings from life on the open range, making it naturally unique. Some of these markings are further enhanced by the addition of dyes and pigments during the manufacturing process.
How to clean and protect your investment:
As you have learned, your investment is a unique and naturally beautiful tool of the trade. But as with all finer things, some maintenance and care are needed to preserve what should be important to you. By following these simple manufacturer’s suggestions, you should be able to maintain your investment for many years and many more adventures!
1) If your product is made from Italian leather, AVOID WET CONDITIONS. Italian leather is tanned differently from saddle leather. It is more ‘refined’ and is not intended for ‘extreme’ use. If your Italian leather product should become wet or soiled, immediately DAB clean and dry – DO NOT RUB DRY. Allow it to air dry in an open position, standing on its side edge overnight. When completely dry, clean with LEXOL PH Leather Cleaner and condition with either LEXOL® Leather Cleaner or LEXOL NF Neatsfoot. Wipe any metal parts clean and dry.
2) Leather, like your skin, needs moisturizing and care on a regular basis. Clean and treat it on a regular basis with LEXOL® products. If you should use your product for any length of time, take a moment to wipe it clean of unwanted debris like sand, dirt, etc. with a soft dry cloth. If your product should get wet, dab dry and air dry overnight, as mentioned above.
3) Although, designed to be carried in a standard jean or cargo pant pocket, extensive enclosure during hot weather or wet conditions may result in dampness from sweating or moisture retention. At the end of your work day, unfold your product, wipe or dab clean, and allow it to dry overnight.
